In 2021, the Slovak knitted fabric market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of knitted or crocheted fabrics were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knitted fabric exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of knitted fabric exports from Slovakia, with a combined 49% share of total exports. Mexico, the Netherlands, China, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, Austria and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +5.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for knitted fabric exported from Slovakia were Germany ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Mexico ($X), together comprising 50% of total exports. Poland, China, the Netherlands, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria and Lithuania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

China, with a CAGR of +7.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average knitted fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 83%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of knitted or crocheted fabrics increased by 1.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 42%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knitted fabric imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 96%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of knitted fabric imports to Slovakia, with a combined 48% share of total imports. Overall, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, knitted fabric import price increased by +49.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 39% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
