For the third year in a row, the Slovak rendered pig fat market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 57% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption saw buoyant growth. Rendered pig fat consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Rendered Pig Fat Production in Slovakia

In value terms, rendered pig fat production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 814% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Slovakia

In 2019, overseas shipments of lard and other pig fat (rendered) decreased by -29.5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2019, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rendered pig fat exports fell significantly to $X in 2019. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2019, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons) was the main destination for rendered pig fat exports from Slovakia, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, rendered pig fat exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hungary (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of volume to Poland totaled +22.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+3.6% per year) and Hungary (-11.4% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for lard and other pig fat (rendered) exports from Slovakia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with an 18% share.

From 2012 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of value to Poland stood at +19.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-12.1% per year) and Russia (-0.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average rendered pig fat export price stood at $X per ton in 2019, growing by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Slovakia

For the third consecutive year, Slovakia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of lard and other pig fat (rendered), which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +37.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, rendered pig fat imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +99.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Hungary (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of rendered pig fat imports to Slovakia, together accounting for 91% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Croatia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 8.2%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +37.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest rendered pig fat suppliers to Slovakia were Austria ($X), Hungary ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 84% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Sweden and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Croatia, with a CAGR of +44.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average rendered pig fat import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
