Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 27%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for bovine and equine leather exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, bovine and equine leather exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-9.4% per year) and Poland (+10.6% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for bovine and equine leather exported from Slovakia were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 74% of total exports. These countries were followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Vietnam, Austria, China, Spain, South Korea, Slovenia and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 17%.
Among the main countries of destination, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +115.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average bovine and equine leather export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, bovine and equine leather export price increased by +50.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+26.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Slovakia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of leather of bovine and equine animals was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Argentina (X tons) were the main suppliers of bovine and equine leather imports to Slovakia, with a combined 77% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Argentina (with a CAGR of +139.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Argentina ($X) appeared to be the largest bovine and equine leather suppliers to Slovakia, with a combined 73% share of total imports.
