In 2022, the Slovak lemon and lime market decreased by -3.9% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. In 2022, overseas shipments of lemons and limes were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 148% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 166% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for lemon and lime exports from Slovakia, with a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, lemon and lime exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hungary amounted to +3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-14.0% per year) and Spain (+43.6% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the key foreign market for lemons and limes exports from Slovakia, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Hungary totaled +2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-13.0% per year) and Spain (+47.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average lemon and lime export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 30%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Greece (+56.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of lemons and limes decreased by -9.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -20.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -13.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lemons and limes to Slovakia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain amounted to +14.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+4.9% per year) and Turkey (-3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average lemon and lime import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cyprus (+6.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
