The average yield of lentils in Slovakia reached X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 257% against the previous year. In 2022, overseas shipments of lentils decreased by -28% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 115%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, lentil exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 74%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for lentil exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, lentil exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +25.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-7.6% per year) and Poland (+11.1% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for lentils exports from Slovakia, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Czech Republic amounted to +3.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-4.0% per year) and Poland (+9.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lentil export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 57%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Bulgaria ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) and Romania ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+7.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia
Lentil imports into Slovakia expanded rapidly to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 6.5% against 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, lentil imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +111.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Canada (X tons) constituted the largest lentil supplier to Slovakia, accounting for a 79% share of total imports. Moreover, lentil imports from Canada exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), more than tenfold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Canada stood at +2.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (-0.3% per year) and Poland (+13.6% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lentils to Slovakia, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 5.3% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 5.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada amounted to +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+24.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+1.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lentil import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lentil import price increased by +69.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were the Netherlands ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Russia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+34.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
