Maize Starch Market Size in Slovakia

In 2021, the Slovak maize starch market decreased by -5.5% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a perceptible decline. Maize starch consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, maize starch production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, maize starch exports from Slovakia fell to X tons, which is down by -12.3% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +1.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize starch exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +7.7% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 76%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of maize starch exports from Slovakia, together accounting for 74% of total exports. Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +86.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest markets for maize starch exported from Slovakia worldwide, with a combined 73% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Croatia, France and the Netherlands, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +81.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average maize starch export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2021, imports of maize (corn) starch into Slovakia dropped notably to X tons, with a decrease of -19.3% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 96%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, maize starch imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Bulgaria (X tons) constituted the largest maize starch supplier to Slovakia, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, maize starch imports from Bulgaria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Bulgaria stood at +7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+121.2% per year) and the Netherlands (+61.3% per year).

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize (corn) starch to Slovakia, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Bulgaria stood at -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+77.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+58.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average maize starch import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
