Malt Market Size in Slovakia

In 2022, the Slovak malt market decreased by -23.8% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, malt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Poland (X tons) was the main destination for malt exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, malt exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), fourfold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Poland amounted to +3.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+13.6% per year) and Hungary (+7.0% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for malt exports from Slovakia, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Poland amounted to +4.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+12.9% per year) and Hungary (+6.2% per year).

The average malt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas purchases of malt decreased by -71.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. Over the period under review, imports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Slovakia, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, malt imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Czech Republic stood at -13.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+75.0% per year) and Germany (+71.3% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of malt to Slovakia, comprising 85% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the UK ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Czech Republic amounted to -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+43.4% per year) and Germany (+49.1% per year).

The average malt import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 112% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate strong growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
