The Slovak non-wheat flour market soared to $X in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine years. In 2021, approx. X tons of non-wheat flours were exported from Slovakia; waning by -73.7% compared with 2020. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 97% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 90%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main destinations of non-wheat flour exports from Slovakia, with a combined 88% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +126.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-wheat flours exports from Slovakia, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 15% share.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of non-wheat flours, when their volume decreased by -3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 109% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-wheat flour imports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest non-wheat flour supplier to Slovakia, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, non-wheat flour imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Austria (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Hungary stood at +14.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+1.5% per year) and Austria (+4.6% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Hungary ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest non-wheat flour suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 70% of total imports. Poland, Austria, Germany, Ukraine and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Ukraine, with a CAGR of +54.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average non-wheat flour import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -21.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
