In 2022, the Slovak nutmeg, mace and cardamom market increased by 13% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. Nutmeg, mace and cardamom consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -34.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 66% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank notably in the following year.

The Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Moldova (X kg) were the main destinations of nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Slovakia, together accounting for 99% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +24.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Hungary ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exported from Slovakia worldwide, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 53%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Moldova (+0.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, purchases abroad of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 38%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom supplier to Slovakia, accounting for a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Guatemala (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Grenada (X tons), with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia amounted to +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guatemala (+5.8% per year) and Grenada (+2.1% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms to Slovakia, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Guatemala ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Grenada, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Indonesia stood at -4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guatemala (+5.4% per year) and Grenada (-2.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -12.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Guatemala ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Grenada ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
