The Slovak onion and shallot market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Exports from Slovakia

Onion and shallot exports from Slovakia fell notably to X tons in 2022, waning by -18.7% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 192%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 161% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for onion and shallot exports from Slovakia, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, onion and shallot exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic stood at +22.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+11.5% per year) and Germany (+19.5% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for onions and shallots exports from Slovakia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

Overall, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 79% against the previous year. Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, overseas purchases of onions and shallots decreased by -12.4% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest onion and shallot supplier to Slovakia, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, onion and shallot imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands totaled +4.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-3.1% per year) and the Czech Republic (-8.3% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Italy ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest onion and shallot suppliers to Slovakia, together accounting for 60% of total imports. Austria, Poland, Germany, Serbia and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Serbia, with a CAGR of +36.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average onion and shallot import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion and shallot import price increased by +66.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 43%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
