In 2022, the Slovak optical fiber cables market increased by 16% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In 2022, overseas shipments of optical fiber cables decreased by -5.1% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 202% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, optical fiber cables exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 96%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for optical fiber cables exports from Slovakia, with a 59% share of total exports. Moreover, optical fiber cables exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Finland (X tons), with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +68.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+79.2% per year) and Finland (+78.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for optical fiber cables exported from Slovakia were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 70% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +64.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average optical fiber cables export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 4%. In 2022, overseas purchases of optical fiber cables increased by 9.3% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, optical fiber cables imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Poland (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of optical fiber cables imports to Slovakia, with a combined 41% share of total imports. Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, the UK, the United States, Italy, France and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +83.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest optical fiber cables suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 43% of total imports. These countries were followed by Poland, Ukraine, the United States, the UK, the Netherlands, Hungary, Austria, France, Switzerland and Italy, which together accounted for a further 17%.

In 2022, the average optical fiber cables import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 24% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
