Exports from Slovakia
In 2022, overseas shipments of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a dramatic slump. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for paper and paperboard exports from Slovakia, with a 96% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary (X tons), with a 2.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic amounted to -22.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+7.9% per year) and Austria (-62.8% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) exports from Slovakia, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 9% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic amounted to -12.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+14.1% per year) and Austria (-54.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average paper and paperboard export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 81% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+22.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated), when their volume decreased by -60.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 87%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest paper and paperboard supplier to Slovakia, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, paper and paperboard imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, North Macedonia (X tons), twofold. Sweden (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Czech Republic amounted to -8.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: North Macedonia (+6.7% per year) and Sweden (+2.1% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and North Macedonia ($X) appeared to be the largest paper and paperboard suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 69% of total imports. Sweden, Romania, Italy, Ukraine, Poland and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +18.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average paper and paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 42% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +97.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+18.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
