Pear Market Size in Slovakia
The Slovak pear market shrank to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -10.2% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 320% against the previous year. Pear production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In 2021, the average yield of pears in Slovakia contracted modestly to X tons per ha, falling by -4.9% against the year before. Overall, the yield, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 286% against the previous year. The pear yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 545% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for pear exports from Slovakia, with a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, pear exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), fourfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hungary amounted to +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-32.7% per year) and Poland (-19.5% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X) remains the key foreign market for pears exports from Slovakia, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Hungary totaled +5.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-30.6% per year) and Poland (-23.8% per year).

In 2021, the average pear export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.5% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pear export price decreased by -5.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 56% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, approx. X tons of pears were imported into Slovakia; with a decrease of -18.5% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, pear imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +45.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 52%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest pear supplier to Slovakia, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, pear imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +10.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+0.2% per year) and Germany (+1.0% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the largest pear suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 76% of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Poland, Spain and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 24%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +33.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average pear import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, pear import price decreased by -19.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
