Plastic Bag Market Size in Slovakia

The Slovak plastic bag market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after four years of decline. Overall, consumption faced a sharp reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +54.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, production reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, overseas shipments of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -3.8% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic bag exports from Slovakia, together comprising 74% of total exports. The Netherlands, France, Poland, Hungary and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Austria ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for plastic bag exported from Slovakia worldwide, with a combined 70% share of total exports. The Netherlands, France, Poland, Hungary and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

The average plastic bag export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 34%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -34.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bag imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Germany (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic bag imports to Slovakia, together accounting for 56% of total imports. China, Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic bag suppliers to Slovakia were the Czech Republic ($X), Poland ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 42% share of total imports. Hungary, China, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

The average plastic bag import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight slump. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
