Exports from Slovakia

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, when their volume increased by 0.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for non-cellular polyethylene film exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, non-cellular polyethylene film exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fourfold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic totaled +6.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-11.9% per year) and Austria (+0.3% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip exports from Slovakia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to the Czech Republic totaled +1.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-12.4% per year) and Italy (+18.6% per year).

In 2021, the average non-cellular polyethylene film export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 28% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2021, the amount of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip imported into Slovakia totaled X tons, increasing by 3.7% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

These countries were followed by Italy, France, Turkey, Bulgaria, Denmark, Hungary, Austria, Croatia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 30%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +271.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-cellular polyethylene film suppliers to Slovakia were Germany ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), together comprising 61% of total imports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Italy, France, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Croatia and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 33%.

Bulgaria, with a CAGR of +210.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average non-cellular polyethylene film import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 34% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decline. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
