In 2022, the Slovak polyvinyl chloride market decreased by -5.4% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a strong expansion. Polyvinyl chloride consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of polyvinyl chloride increased by 124% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polyvinyl chloride exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 113%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for polyvinyl chloride exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, polyvinyl chloride exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Czech Republic amounted to +15.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-4.2% per year) and Italy (-7.1% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for polyvinyl chloride exports from Slovakia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Czech Republic totaled +16.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+0.5% per year) and Italy (-2.2% per year).

In 2022, the average polyvinyl chloride export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polyvinyl chloride export price increased by +43.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 62%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2022, imports of polyvinyl chloride into Slovakia rose modestly to X tons, picking up by 3.8% compared with 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +5.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 55%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyvinyl chloride imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of polyvinyl chloride imports to Slovakia, with a combined 56% share of total imports. Hungary, Ukraine, Lithuania, Serbia, Sweden, Poland and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Serbia (with a CAGR of +86.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest polyvinyl chloride suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 60% of total imports. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
