The Slovak postcard market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, increasing by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced decline. Overall, exports saw a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 130% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, postcard exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 138%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

France (X tons) was the main destination for postcard exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, postcard exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), fivefold. Austria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to France was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-14.5% per year) and Austria (+86.7% per year).

In value terms, France ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for postcard exported from Slovakia worldwide, with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Austria, Spain, Poland and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 20%.

Among the main countries of destination, Spain, with a CAGR of +3,483.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average postcard export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 39% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+86.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of printed or illustrated postcards and printed cards imported into Slovakia declined rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -28.6% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 324% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, postcard imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 188%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ireland (X tons) constituted the largest postcard supplier to Slovakia, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, postcard imports from Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ireland amounted to +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+29.0% per year) and the Czech Republic (-6.8% per year).

In value terms, Ireland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest postcard suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 93% of total imports. The Netherlands and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 3.2%.

Among the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +138.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average postcard import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 59% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
