Rice Market Size in Slovakia

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovak rice market, when its value decreased by -16% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports from Slovakia

In 2021, overseas shipments of rice increased by 49% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rice exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 92%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of rice exports from Slovakia, together comprising 89% of total exports. These countries were followed by Poland, Slovenia and Germany, which together accounted for a further 10%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovenia (with a CAGR of +178.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Hungary ($X), Austria ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the largest markets for rice exported from Slovakia worldwide, with a combined 88% share of total exports. Poland, Slovenia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.

Slovenia, with a CAGR of +167.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average rice export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 69% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2021, the amount of rice imported into Slovakia declined to X tons, reducing by -11.9% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, rice imports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons), Romania (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of rice imports to Slovakia, with a combined 83% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +36.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of rice to Slovakia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Romania ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Czech Republic totaled +14.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Romania (+34.0% per year) and Italy (-14.9% per year).

The average rice import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
