Coniferous Roundwood Market Size in Slovakia

The Slovak coniferous roundwood market declined to $X in 2022, waning by -7.3% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. For the fourth consecutive year, Slovakia recorded decline in overseas shipments of roundwood (coniferous), which decreased by -4.4% to X cubic meters in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 36%. The exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Romania (X cubic meters), Italy (X cubic meters) and the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of coniferous roundwood exports from Slovakia, together accounting for 65% of total exports. Hungary, Poland, Austria and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +196.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Romania ($X), Italy ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for coniferous roundwood exported from Slovakia worldwide, with a combined 62% share of total exports. Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +149.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average coniferous roundwood export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, with a decrease of -11.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 19% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (-2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Slovakia

After six years of growth, overseas purchases of roundwood (coniferous) decreased by -15.7% to X cubic meters in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 143%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 139%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) constituted the largest coniferous roundwood supplier to Slovakia, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, coniferous roundwood imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X cubic meters), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Czech Republic amounted to +85.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+68.2% per year) and Poland (-0.1% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of roundwood (coniferous) to Slovakia, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Czech Republic stood at +81.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+61.4% per year) and Poland (+15.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average coniferous roundwood import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, picking up by 8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 51% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per cubic meter), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
