The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved sardines exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The Czech Republic (X tons) was the main destination for preserved sardines exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved sardines exports to the Czech Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Romania (X tons), threefold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Czech Republic was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Romania (+5.1% per year) and Hungary (+0.5% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) remains the key foreign market for sardines (prepared or preserved) exports from Slovakia, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Czech Republic amounted to -6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+31.7% per year) and Hungary (+0.8% per year).

The average preserved sardines export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of sardines (prepared or preserved) were imported into Slovakia; picking up by 35% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild curtailment. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved sardines imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Morocco (X tons) constituted the largest preserved sardines supplier to Slovakia, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved sardines imports from Morocco exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Latvia (X tons), fivefold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Morocco stood at +16.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (-4.7% per year) and Poland (-2.4% per year).

In value terms, Morocco ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sardines (prepared or preserved) to Slovakia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Latvia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Morocco totaled +16.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Latvia (+0.3% per year) and Croatia (+1.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average preserved sardines import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -4.6% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Croatia ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Estonia (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
