Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in Slovakia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovak shelled hazelnut market, when its value decreased by -64.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption saw a deep setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Shelled Hazelnut Production in Slovakia

In value terms, shelled hazelnut production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 325%. Shelled hazelnut production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Slovakia

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of shelled hazelnuts increased by 133% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 174% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 136%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons) was the main destination for shelled hazelnut exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Poland stood at +24.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-2.7% per year) and France (+0.2% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for shelled hazelnut exported from Slovakia were Poland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 85% share of total exports. Hungary and Slovenia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 8.7%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Hungary, with a CAGR of +26.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average shelled hazelnut export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Shelled Hazelnut Imports

Imports into Slovakia

In 2021, approx. X tons of shelled hazelnuts were imported into Slovakia; with an increase of 2.6% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 102% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of shelled hazelnut imports to Slovakia, with a combined 84% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Croatia and Azerbaijan, which together accounted for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +92.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Italy ($X) and Turkey ($X) were the largest shelled hazelnut suppliers to Slovakia, together comprising 85% of total imports. Germany, Croatia, Azerbaijan and Georgia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +95.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average shelled hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -2.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, shelled hazelnut import price increased by +20.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 71%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from the Czech Republic ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Croatia ($X per ton) and Georgia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
