Strawberry Market Size in Slovakia

After six years of growth, the Slovak strawberry market decreased by -23.4% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Strawberry Production in Slovakia

Over the period under review, the total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. In 2022, the average yield of strawberries in Slovakia rose notably to X tons per ha, with an increase of 7.6% on the previous year's figure. Exports from Slovakia

In 2022, exports of strawberries from Slovakia soared to X tons, rising by 60% on the previous year. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a measured increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, strawberry exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Spain (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of strawberry exports from Slovakia, with a combined 91% share of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Slovakia

After seven years of growth, purchases abroad of strawberries decreased by -11.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, strawberry imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest strawberry supplier to Slovakia, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, strawberry imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), sevenfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +5.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+76.2% per year) and Italy (+12.8% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of strawberries to Slovakia, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Greece, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +9.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+81.4% per year) and Greece (+49.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average strawberry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, strawberry import price increased by +45.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 21%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
