Exports from Slovakia

In 2021, shipments abroad of synthetic filament tow and staple fibers, not carded or combed increased by 8.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, synthetic filament tow exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for synthetic filament tow exports from Slovakia, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, synthetic filament tow exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to -2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-11.5% per year) and Italy (+17.4% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for synthetic filament tow exports from Slovakia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 1.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-10.0% per year) and Hungary (-37.8% per year).

Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +33.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, synthetic filament tow imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest synthetic filament tow supplier to Slovakia, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, synthetic filament tow imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Czech Republic (X tons), with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at +5.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+29.0% per year) and the Czech Republic (+47.9% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of synthetic filament tow to Slovakia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium stood at +18.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-1.3% per year) and the Netherlands (+10.0% per year).

The average synthetic filament tow import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Luxembourg ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+8.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
