The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, tomato exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 46%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Hungary (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of tomato exports from Slovakia.

Imports into Slovakia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of tomatoes, when their volume decreased by -11.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of tomato imports to Slovakia, with a combined 68% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Hungary, Germany, France and Poland, which together accounted for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by France (with a CAGR of +44.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
