Triticale Market Size in Slovakia

The Slovak triticale market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a perceptible reduction. Triticale consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Triticale Production in Slovakia

In value terms, triticale production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 23%. Triticale production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average triticale yield in Slovakia rose to X tons per ha, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average triticale yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the triticale harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, approx. X tons of triticale were exported from Slovakia; with a decrease of -52.7% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 248% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, triticale exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 193% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for triticale exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, triticale exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Austria stood at +14.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-1.6% per year) and Germany (+10.7% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for triticale exported from Slovakia worldwide, together accounting for 76% of total exports. Poland, the Netherlands, Hungary and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +23.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average triticale export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 36%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of triticale decreased by -83.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 10,518% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, triticale imports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 297% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest triticale supplier to Slovakia, with a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, triticale imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Hungary (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Czech Republic totaled +29.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+18.9% per year) and Hungary (+0.7% per year).

In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), Austria ($X) and Germany ($X) constituted the largest triticale suppliers to Slovakia, with a combined 60% share of total imports.

The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +32.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average triticale import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -19.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price faced a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 110%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
