In 2021, overseas shipments of vehicles not mechanically propelled decreased by -15.7% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 123%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 117%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units) was the main destination for non-propelled vehicle exports from Slovakia, with a 47% share of total exports. Moreover, non-propelled vehicle exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X units), twofold. Hungary (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany stood at +19.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+20.4% per year) and Hungary (+0.7% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for non-propelled vehicle exports from Slovakia, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany amounted to +5.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+11.1% per year) and the Czech Republic (+6.8% per year).

The average non-propelled vehicle export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 4.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 33%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, approx. X units of vehicles not mechanically propelled were imported into Slovakia; rising by 12% against the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -19.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -23.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Czech Republic (X units), Germany (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of non-propelled vehicle imports to Slovakia, together accounting for 80% of total imports. Sweden, Austria, Poland and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
