Yoghurt Market Size in Slovakia
After three years of growth, the Slovak yoghurt market decreased by -7% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw significant growth. Yoghurt consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Yoghurt Production in Slovakia
In value terms, yoghurt production expanded modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw measured growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Slovakia
In 2022, shipments abroad of yoghurt increased by 45% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 118%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, yoghurt exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 117%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Spain (X tons) was the main destination for yoghurt exports from Slovakia, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, yoghurt exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tons), fourfold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Spain totaled -9.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+6.7% per year) and Hungary (+47.3% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for yoghurt exports from Slovakia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Spain amounted to -9.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+0.1% per year) and Hungary (+36.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average yoghurt export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 17%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Yoghurt Imports
Imports into Slovakia
In 2022, approx. X tons of yoghurt were imported into Slovakia; surging by 4.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, yoghurt imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Czech Republic (X tons) constituted the largest yoghurt supplier to Slovakia, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, yoghurt imports from the Czech Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with an 8.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Czech Republic was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-1.4% per year) and Germany (-7.0% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest supplier of yoghurt to Slovakia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the Czech Republic amounted to -1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (-2.0% per year) and Germany (-5.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average yoghurt import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
