In 2022, the Slovene market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -3.4% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +72.8% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, shipments abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -47.3% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 442%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Germany (X units), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X units) and Poland (X units) were the main destinations of exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers from Slovenia, with a combined 70% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +77.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) remains the key foreign market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exports from Slovenia, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to +54.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+24.4% per year) and Italy (+13.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers into Slovenia fell markedly to X units, with a decrease of -20.2% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 47%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Serbia (X units), Austria (X units) and the Czech Republic (X units) were the main suppliers of imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers to Slovenia, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Italy, Romania, Denmark, Croatia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +128.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Serbia ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container suppliers to Slovenia, together comprising 71% of total imports. The Czech Republic, Denmark, Romania, Croatia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +132.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per unit), while the price for Austria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
