In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovene market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander, when its value decreased by -45.9% to $X. In general, consumption, however, recorded a mild expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 5,361% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Austria amounted to +138.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+34.8% per year) and the UK (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports from Slovenia, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria totaled +131.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+27.3% per year) and the UK (0.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (-2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, purchases abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -62.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 161% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) constituted the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier to Slovenia, accounting for a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports from Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, North Macedonia (X tons), threefold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Bosnia and Herzegovina stood at +7.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: North Macedonia (-12.1% per year) and Italy (+18.7% per year).

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) constituted the largest supplier of anise, badian, fennel and coriander to Slovenia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by North Macedonia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Serbia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Bosnia and Herzegovina totaled +18.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: North Macedonia (-2.3% per year) and Serbia (+15.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for anise, badian, fennel and coriander amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 29%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
