Asparagus Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, the Slovene asparagus market decreased by -7.9% to $X, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption posted strong growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Asparagus Production in Slovenia

In value terms, asparagus production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 174% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of asparagus in Slovenia soared to X tons per ha in 2022, growing by 106% on 2021. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 124%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average asparagus yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of asparagus production in Slovenia declined rapidly to X ha, which is down by -33.9% on 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 210%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then declined notably in the following year.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of asparagus, when their volume decreased by -68.5% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 153% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons) was the main destination for asparagus exports from Slovenia, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, asparagus exports to Croatia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Montenegro (X tons), threefold. Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Croatia totaled +66.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Montenegro (+43.6% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-2.3% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X), Montenegro ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) were the largest markets for asparagus exported from Slovenia worldwide, together comprising 93% of total exports. Italy and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.2%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Austria, with a CAGR of +104.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average asparagus export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -22.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Montenegro ($X per ton) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+26.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Asparagus Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, approx. X tons of asparagus were imported into Slovenia; shrinking by -28% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 33%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 45%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of asparagus imports to Slovenia, together accounting for 82% of total imports. Croatia, Greece, Peru and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +64.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest asparagus suppliers to Slovenia were Austria ($X), Italy ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports. Croatia, Peru, Greece and North Macedonia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Croatia, with a CAGR of +63.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average asparagus import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
