Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The Czech Republic (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main destinations of hot-rolled steel bar and rod exports from Slovenia, with a combined 43% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Serbia, Croatia, France, Italy, Denmark, Slovakia, China, the Netherlands and Romania, which together accounted for a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +34.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for hot-rolled steel bar and rod exported from Slovenia were Germany ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Hungary ($X), together comprising 40% of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Croatia, Italy, Serbia, France, Denmark, Slovakia, China, the Netherlands and Romania, which together accounted for a further 47%.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +39.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 34% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hot-rolled steel bar and rod export price increased by +67.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, overseas purchases of hot-rolled steel bars and rods decreased by -4.9% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +18.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 79%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hot-rolled steel bar and rod to Slovenia, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, hot-rolled steel bar and rod imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Austria (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy totaled +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+275.8% per year) and Austria (+4.1% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hot-rolled steel bars and rods to Slovenia, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Austria, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy stood at +6.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+247.1% per year) and Austria (+7.8% per year).

The average import price for hot-rolled steel bars and rods stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hot-rolled steel bar and rod import price increased by +90.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
