In 2022, book cover exports from Slovenia fell modestly to X tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +27.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, book cover exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 66%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main destinations of book cover exports from Slovenia, together accounting for 79% of total exports. Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +196.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for blotting pads and book covers exports from Slovenia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Croatia ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+31.7% per year) and the UK (+202.2% per year).

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 42% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of blotting pads and book covers decreased by -5.5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 149%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, book cover imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 95%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of book cover imports to Slovenia, together comprising 59% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +37.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest book cover suppliers to Slovenia were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Croatia ($X), with a combined 51% share of total imports. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain, Austria, China, Poland and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 41%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
