In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 91%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a notable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons) was the main destination for cabbage exports from Slovenia, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, cabbage exports to Croatia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Croatia stood at +6.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+11.2% per year) and Italy (+0.1% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) remains the key foreign market for cabbage and other brassicas exports from Slovenia, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Croatia totaled +12.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (+12.3% per year) and Italy (-1.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cabbage export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 28%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cabbage imports into Slovenia contracted to X tons in 2022, which is down by -7.3% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -25.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of cabbage imports to Slovenia, together accounting for 55% of total imports. North Macedonia, Italy, Austria, Serbia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +34.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest cabbage suppliers to Slovenia were Croatia ($X), Austria ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Poland, North Macedonia, Serbia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +39.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average cabbage import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
