Carbon Dioxide Market Size in Slovenia
For the fourth year in a row, the Slovene carbon dioxide market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 20% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +31.7% against 2017 indices. Carbon dioxide consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Carbon Dioxide Production in Slovenia
In value terms, carbon dioxide production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Slovenia
In 2022, overseas shipments of carbon dioxide increased by 86% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, carbon dioxide exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for carbon dioxide exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 75% share of total exports. Moreover, carbon dioxide exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled -5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+59.4% per year) and Hungary (+57.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for carbon dioxide exported from Slovenia were Italy ($X), Croatia ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 92% of total exports.
Croatia, with a CAGR of +53.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carbon dioxide export price amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carbon dioxide export price decreased by -6.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+1.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Carbon Dioxide Imports
Imports into Slovenia
In 2022, approx. X tons of carbon dioxide were imported into Slovenia; rising by 23% on 2021. In general, imports saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, carbon dioxide imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.6% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest carbon dioxide supplier to Slovenia, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, carbon dioxide imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Hungary (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at +27.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (+26.1% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-2.9% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carbon dioxide to Slovenia, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Hungary stood at +33.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+24.1% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+15.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average carbon dioxide import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 59% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
