In 2022, overseas shipments of carrots and turnips decreased by -52.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 274% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carrot and turnip exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 518% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) were the main destinations of carrot and turnip exports from Slovenia, together comprising 91% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +48.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for carrots and turnips exports from Slovenia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 12% share.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+15.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, purchases abroad of carrots and turnips decreased by -14.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carrot and turnip imports shrank markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of carrot and turnip imports to Slovenia, with a combined 88% share of total imports. Serbia, Poland and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +37.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest carrot and turnip suppliers to Slovenia were Austria ($X), Italy ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 87% of total imports. Serbia, Croatia and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +41.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average carrot and turnip import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -11.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
