Cherry Market Size in Slovenia

The Slovene cherry market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. Cherry consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Cherry Production in Slovenia

In value terms, cherry production soared to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 189%. Cherry production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of cherries in Slovenia soared to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 497% compared with the year before. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The cherry yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the cherry harvested area in Slovenia totaled X ha, remaining stable against 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. The cherry harvested area peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, shipments abroad of cherries decreased by -90.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 2,455%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cherry exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 1,113%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons) was the main destination for cherry exports from Slovenia, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, cherry exports to Croatia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Spain (X tons), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Croatia amounted to -11.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+20.4% per year) and Spain (-13.9% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) remains the key foreign market for cherries exports from Slovenia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Croatia totaled +1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+15.3% per year) and Spain (-14.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average cherry export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 129% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Italy ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+14.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Cherry Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, approx. X tons of cherries were imported into Slovenia; reducing by -41% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, cherry imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 100%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Serbia (X tons) were the main suppliers of cherry imports to Slovenia, with a combined 79% share of total imports. Germany, Spain, Austria and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +66.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Greece ($X) and Serbia ($X) constituted the largest cherry suppliers to Slovenia, together comprising 69% of total imports. Germany, Spain, Austria and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Among the main suppliers, Croatia, with a CAGR of +76.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cherry import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -21.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 43%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
