Coconut Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, the Slovene coconut market increased by 144% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a buoyant increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of coconuts, when their volume decreased by -87.1% to X tons. In general, exports saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 330%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, coconut exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 307%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) was the main destination for coconut exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, coconut exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X kg), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Austria (X kg), with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina stood at +8.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+24.8% per year) and Austria (+67.4% per year).

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) remains the key foreign market for coconuts exports from Slovenia, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Croatia ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Bosnia and Herzegovina totaled +17.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+33.4% per year) and Austria (+69.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average coconut export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 94%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Montenegro ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Greece (+28.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Coconut Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, overseas purchases of coconuts increased by 0.6% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 97% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, coconut imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 82%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Croatia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of coconut imports to Slovenia, together comprising 54% of total imports. Sri Lanka, Germany, Indonesia and Nicaragua lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Nicaragua (with a CAGR of +33.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sri Lanka ($X), Germany ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the largest coconut suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 69% share of total imports.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +39.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average coconut import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 6% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, coconut import price increased by +51.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 42%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while the price for Nicaragua ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+11.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
