Garlic Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, the Slovene garlic market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Garlic Production in Slovenia

In value terms, garlic production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Garlic production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average garlic yield in Slovenia contracted modestly to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -2.9% compared with the year before. In general, the yield recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 7.6%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the average garlic yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The garlic harvested area in Slovenia expanded significantly to X ha in 2022, increasing by 5.6% on the previous year's figure. In general, the total harvested area indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, garlic harvested area increased by +5.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 87% against the previous year. The garlic harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Garlic Exports

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, shipments abroad of garlic decreased by -47.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 459% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 496%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for garlic exports from Slovenia, with a 66% share of total exports. Moreover, garlic exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), threefold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy totaled +31.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (0.0% per year) and Croatia (+102.1% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for garlic exports from Slovenia, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy stood at +36.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (0.0% per year) and Croatia (+92.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average garlic export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 37%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Garlic Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of garlic decreased by -28.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 197%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 195%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of garlic imports to Slovenia, together comprising 84% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +87.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of garlic to Slovenia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+2.4% per year) and Egypt (+75.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average garlic import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 10% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Croatia (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
