Ginger Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, the Slovene ginger market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a strong increase. Ginger consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of ginger in Slovenia amounted to less than X kg per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of ginger, when their volume decreased by -79.9% to X tons. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 511% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, ginger exports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 579%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) was the main destination for ginger exports from Slovenia, with a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, ginger exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), fourfold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina totaled +25.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+72.8% per year) and Croatia (+44.3% per year).

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), Italy ($X) and Croatia ($X) constituted the largest markets for ginger exported from Slovenia worldwide, together comprising 78% of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +70.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average ginger export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 40%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Ginger Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, the amount of ginger imported into Slovenia dropped markedly to X tons, falling by -18.5% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 109%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ginger imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 218%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons), China (X tons) and Peru (X tons) were the main suppliers of ginger imports to Slovenia, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Austria, Italy, Hungary and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +100.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), China ($X) and Peru ($X) constituted the largest ginger suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 60% share of total imports. Austria, Germany, Italy and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +97.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average ginger import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -20.7% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ginger import price decreased by -26.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 52% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
