The Slovene honey market soared to $X in 2022, increasing by 93% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. Honey consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Slovenia
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of honey, when their volume decreased by -78.1% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 199% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, honey exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 180% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Canada (X tons) was the main destination for honey exports from Slovenia, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, honey exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Canada amounted to +507.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+4.0% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+62.5% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the key foreign market for honey exports from Slovenia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Serbia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Canada totaled +487.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+10.2% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+54.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average honey export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Honey Imports
Imports into Slovenia
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of honey decreased by -45.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, honey imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Croatia (X tons) were the main suppliers of honey imports to Slovenia, together comprising 63% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +62.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Hungary ($X) and Croatia ($X) were the largest honey suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 52% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Croatia, with a CAGR of +59.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average honey import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild reduction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
