The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, overseas shipments of lettuce and chicory decreased by -71% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 308%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 231% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for lettuce and chicory exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria stood at +34.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+20.4% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+2.0% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for lettuce and chicory exports from Slovenia, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Croatia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria stood at +30.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+27.2% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (+7.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average lettuce and chicory export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 8.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory increased by 6.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 7.7%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 36%. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of lettuce and chicory to Slovenia, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), ninefold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy amounted to -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+5.5% per year) and Croatia (+8.7% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lettuce and chicory to Slovenia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Croatia, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+3.0% per year) and Croatia (+16.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average lettuce and chicory import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
