Maize Market Size in Slovenia
After two years of decline, the Slovene maize market increased by 59% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Slovenia
In 2022, overseas shipments of maize (green) decreased by -80.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 484%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, maize exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 328% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Austria (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Slovenia, together accounting for 91% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +65.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Austria ($X), Croatia ($X) and Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for maize exported from Slovenia worldwide, with a combined 88% share of total exports.
Croatia, with a CAGR of +51.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average maize export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -20.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a mild expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 104%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Montenegro ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Montenegro (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Imports
Imports into Slovenia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of maize (green) decreased by -1.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -10.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, maize imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -17.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Slovenia, with a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), threefold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+0.7% per year) and Croatia (+24.3% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize (green) to Slovenia, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy stood at +3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+6.3% per year) and Croatia (+35.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average maize import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 72% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
