Maize Market Size in Slovenia
For the third year in a row, the Slovene maize market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 39% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +81.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Maize Production in Slovenia
In value terms, maize production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 28%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average maize yield in Slovenia rose rapidly to X tons per ha, increasing by 7.3% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize yield decreased by -6.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 69%. The maize yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of maize production in Slovenia contracted modestly to X ha, waning by -1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the harvested area increased by 6.9% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the maize harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Slovenia
In 2022, overseas shipments of maize decreased by -68.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 269%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, maize exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 221%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for maize exports from Slovenia, with a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, maize exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Croatia (X tons), with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy amounted to +11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+5.8% per year) and Croatia (+42.6% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for maize exports from Slovenia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Croatia, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy totaled +12.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+6.1% per year) and Croatia (+48.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average maize export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Germany ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Maize Imports
Imports into Slovenia
Maize imports into Slovenia reduced rapidly to X tons in 2022, which is down by -70% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 361%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, maize imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 281%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Croatia (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of maize imports to Slovenia, with a combined 95% share of total imports. Serbia and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.9%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +65.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Croatia ($X), Hungary ($X) and Austria ($X) were the largest maize suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 87% share of total imports. Serbia and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.9%.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +69.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 37% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price increased by +98.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per ton), while the price for Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
