Melon Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Slovene melon market, when its value increased by 22% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a deep contraction. Melon consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Melon Production in Slovenia

In value terms, melon production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the average melon yield in Slovenia dropped notably to X tons per ha, with a decrease of -21.3% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield faced a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 47%. The melon yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of melons in Slovenia soared to X ha, growing by 50% against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 100% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the melon harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, shipments abroad of melons decreased by -64.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 141% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, melon exports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 182%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main destinations of melon exports from Slovenia, together comprising 71% of total exports. Austria, Italy, Hungary and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +50.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Croatia ($X), Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) and Austria ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for melon exported from Slovenia worldwide, with a combined 75% share of total exports. Italy, Ukraine, Hungary and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Among the main countries of destination, Hungary, with a CAGR of +48.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average melon export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon export price increased by +55.7% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Melon Imports

Imports into Slovenia

For the third year in a row, Slovenia recorded decline in supplies from abroad of melons, which decreased by -8.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 19%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest melon supplier to Slovenia, accounting for a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, melon imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), fivefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-0.1% per year) and Spain (-3.6% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of melons to Slovenia, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+1.2% per year) and Spain (-0.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average melon import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($X per ton), while the price for Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
