Molasse Market Size in Slovenia

For the fifth year in a row, the Slovene molasse market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 10% to $X in 2022. Overall, the total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +63.5% against 2017 indices. Molasse consumption peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Molasse Production in Slovenia

In value terms, molasse production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Slovenia

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of molasses decreased by -59.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 15,584%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, molasse exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 3,774%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for molasse exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, molasse exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Croatia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy totaled +211.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+1,912.5% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-29.1% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for molasses exports from Slovenia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Croatia ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy stood at +113.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (+1,692.1% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-40.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average molasse export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a sharp setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (-11.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Molasse Imports

Imports into Slovenia

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of molasses decreased by -4.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 72%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, molasse imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 48%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of molasse to Slovenia, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, molasse imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), twofold. Croatia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Hungary totaled +31.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (-4.0% per year) and Croatia (+19.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest molasse suppliers to Slovenia were Hungary ($X), Austria ($X) and Croatia ($X), together accounting for 85% of total imports.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +27.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average molasse import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
