In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovene nutmeg, mace and cardamom market, when its value decreased by -11.6% to $X. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +50.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 2,513%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sweden (X kg), Croatia (X kg) and Montenegro (X kg) were the main destinations of nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Slovenia, together comprising 89% of total exports. Italy, Poland, Russia and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.4%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +22.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for nutmeg, mace and cardamoms exports from Slovenia, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Croatia ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Montenegro, with a 2.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Sweden amounted to -81.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Croatia (-13.6% per year) and Montenegro (-24.4% per year).

In 2022, the average nutmeg, mace and cardamom export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 56% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a tangible expansion. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+121.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms, when their volume decreased by -43% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 117% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 56%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamom to Slovenia, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, nutmeg, mace and cardamom imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Croatia (X tons), twofold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia stood at -5.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Croatia (+78.6% per year) and Poland (+113.5% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the largest nutmeg, mace and cardamom suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 75% share of total imports. Poland, Italy, Germany and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +124.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 39% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
