Onion And Shallot Market Size in Slovenia

After two years of decline, the Slovene onion and shallot market increased by 8% to $X in 2022. In general, the total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion and shallot harvested area decreased by -5.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 34% against the previous year. Exports from Slovenia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of onions and shallots decreased by -81.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 142% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In value terms, onion and shallot exports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 304%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Ukraine (X tons), Croatia (X tons) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) were the main destinations of onion and shallot exports from Slovenia, together accounting for 77% of total exports. Montenegro, Serbia, Austria and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Montenegro (with a CAGR of +28.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Croatia ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Serbia ($X) constituted the largest markets for onion and shallot exported from Slovenia worldwide, with a combined 76% share of total exports. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Italy and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Montenegro, with a CAGR of +24.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average onion and shallot export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -28.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Onion And Shallot Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, onion and shallot imports into Slovenia shrank rapidly to X tons, which is down by -16.9% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Austria (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of onion and shallot imports to Slovenia, together comprising 75% of total imports. Egypt, Croatia, Germany and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Croatia (with a CAGR of +29.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
