Papaya Market Size in Slovenia

The Slovene papaya market skyrocketed to $X in 2022, picking up by 37% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Overall, consumption enjoyed a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, overseas shipments of papayas decreased by -43.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,250% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, papaya exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,215% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Croatia (X kg) was the main destination for papaya exports from Slovenia, accounting for a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, papaya exports to Croatia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X kg), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Bosnia and Herzegovina (X kg), with a 19% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Croatia stood at +32.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+35.2% per year) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (-6.0% per year).

In value terms, Croatia ($X) remains the key foreign market for papayas exports from Slovenia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Montenegro, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Croatia stood at +42.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bosnia and Herzegovina (-1.9% per year) and Montenegro (+14.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average papaya export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, papaya export price increased by +51.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Croatia (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Papaya Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, purchases abroad of papayas was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, papaya imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Brazil (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of papaya imports to Slovenia, together accounting for 85% of total imports. Germany, Italy, Ghana and Ecuador lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +221.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of papayas to Slovenia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil stood at +10.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+97.3% per year) and Spain (+27.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average papaya import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -14.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while the price for Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
