Plastic Bag Market Size in Slovenia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Slovene plastic bag market, when its value decreased by -6.9% to $X. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +66.9% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Plastic Bag Production in Slovenia

In value terms, plastic bag production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Slovenia

In 2022, overseas shipments of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -4.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after nine years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic bag exports from Slovenia, with a combined 62% share of total exports. Romania, Croatia, Greece, Poland, Switzerland, Serbia, France, the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +105.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the largest markets for plastic bag exported from Slovenia worldwide, together comprising 55% of total exports. Romania, Croatia, Greece, France, Switzerland, Poland, Serbia, the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Romania, with a CAGR of +100.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+20.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Plastic Bag Imports

Imports into Slovenia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of plastic sacks and bags decreased by -17.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bag imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Italy (X tons), Serbia (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of plastic bag imports to Slovenia, together accounting for 41% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Serbia (with a CAGR of +33.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Austria ($X) were the largest plastic bag suppliers to Slovenia, with a combined 50% share of total imports. Croatia, China, Serbia, Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Netherlands, Vietnam and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Serbia, with a CAGR of +19.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average plastic bag import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+19.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
