In general, exports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 790%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 3,079%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exports from Slovenia, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X kg), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany amounted to +51.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+65.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+46.1% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest markets for polyphenols and phenol-alcohols exported from Slovenia worldwide, with a combined 37% share of total exports.
In terms of the main countries of destination, France, with a CAGR of +186.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average polyphenols and phenol-alcohols export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 922%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+45.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Slovenia
In 2022, supplies from abroad of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 223%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of polyphenols and phenol-alcohols to Slovenia, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, polyphenols and phenol-alcohols imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +13.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-2.9% per year) and Germany (+0.2% per year).
In value terms, the largest polyphenols and phenol-alcohols suppliers to Slovenia were the United States ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Switzerland, the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Switzerland, with a CAGR of +376.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average polyphenols and phenol-alcohols import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -21.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 232% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Switzerland (+67.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
